This is the Science of the Light, Simplified for you. And now, your host, Mike Volcan.

Mike (00:37)
Okay, everybody, thank you for joining us for another Red Light Therapy podcast. I have Dr. Inman with us today. He's a performance, sports performance specialist from West Texas. Welcome to the show, Dr. Inman.

Alan (00:49)
Well, it's great to be back.

Mike (00:51)
Yeah, Dr. Inman has two clinics in Costa Rica. And he's a medical director of a stem cell clinic, which I'm a customer of. as a red light therapy expert, he's going to be sharing us as he always does, his wisdom. so you can make the most out of your red light therapy device. So as you know, each episode is designed to be no more than 15 minute session, just enough for a red light therapy session, so you can listen while you do your red light therapy. How ironic would that be? So today we're discussing pulsing, red light therapy and pulsing.

There's a lot of snake oil in this industry, and you're gonna find out all about them today. And let's go ahead and just start firing questions at you, Dr. I. Is that is that a good time? All

Alan (01:30)
Go for it.

Mike (01:32)
right, by the way, if you're a listener out there and you want to ask a question, just go to red light therapy podcast.com, submit your question, and we'll get it on a future episode for you. But today it's all about pulsing. So let's start off just discussing what exactly is the pulse setting on these red light therapy devices and

Why would I ever use it?

What Is the Pulse Setting and Why Would I Use It?

Alan (01:51)
Okay, so the pulse setting is a setting in where the light will turn on and off instead of being continuous on a certain frequency. And what has been shown through medical studies is sometimes frequency can show that there is improvement over continuous and that at the end of the day we need to keep in mind one thing. The evidence hasn't been shown enough for us to be able to say, okay, there's protocol set up.

So that it can do this and it can do that. The idea is that we know that there is that function. It's available. And as time goes by and there are more medical studies, we'll be able to use it in the correct fashion. But if you wanna use it, it's still gonna have a function. I just can't tell you a protocol because there isn't one yet.

Can Certain Pulse Speeds Help With Different Types of Healing?

Mike (02:42)
Yeah, I think it's it's so new and there hasn't been any definitive studies on it. But can certain pulse speeds help with different types of healing?

Alan (02:51)
So potentially, yes, but we need to be really careful with that. Just because we say, you know, ten, you know, ten hertz can do this, or, you know, forty hertz can be for the brain or or a hundred hertz, you know, for that, we we can't state that at this moment. the problem is there the science isn't strong enough to be able to prove this. And, you know, different frequencies have produced at the end of the day, interesting effects in different studies. And so we can, you know, kind of look at that.

But at the end, when they look at the total, they're like, there's not much of a difference between continuous and what is pulsed. So it's better to stick with what what there is of information.

Is Flicker-Free Mode Better Than Pulsing?

Mike (03:33)
Yeah, that makes sense. it I see some of these panels, these red light therapy panels have like what do you call it, like a flicker free mode. Is it better to leave the light on a flicker free mode?

Alan (03:45)
For me, that's my default mode. So I I I would say it is in, you know, continuous, flicker free mode and and infrared already produce the biological effects we're looking for at the end of the day. And so you don't need pulsing to simulate mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling. Even platinum LED does not claim that there is, you know, superior function one over the other. So it's not something that I would state, but

The flicker free is a nice component too.

Does Pulsing Help Light Penetrate Deeper?

Mike (04:19)
Well put it this way, does pulsing help the light penetrate deeper into the body? Or if not, like what's the purpose of

Alan (04:24)
It has not nothing to do with the way that that it penetrates. It has to do the with the physiological effects on it on the cells. And so with certain studies they've seen that there is a certain change with having different frequencies. But like I said, there isn't enough. And so it is nice to have the settings. So if you know, tomorrow they release a study, it's like, you know, my panel is capable of doing that as of, you know, now I gotta buy a new one. So

That's the nice thing about having this setup of, you know, pulsing over continuous.

Why Does the BioMax Pro Offer Such a Wide Frequency Range?

Mike (05:01)
Okay. So we've talked about the Biomax Pro by Platinum Therapy Lite before. Why does the Biomax Pro allow for this massive range of frequencies?

Alan (05:11)
Because it's better to have a lot more range just in case there is emerging studies that are gonna show, you know, this amount of Hertz is gonna lead to helping this tissue and these amount of Hertz is gonna help with this tissue. And so it's just one of those components that's really important because there is emerging studies, but there still isn't sufficient, but it gives us that option. So if you want to play around with it, you can.

It there's just not enough for me to be able to sit here in front of everyone and say, Look, this is what you need to do of Hertz for this tissue.

Can I Feel the Pulsing?

Mike (05:48)
Okay. I'll be honest, like I mean, I've never really used the pulsing because I know there's no studies that really back up, but can I feel the pulsing or is it too fast to notice? What is that what is that like when people use the pulsing?

Alan (06:01)
At a very low frequency, you won't feel it. I mean, it's the same red light therapy. Contit continuous or pulsed, there is not a difference. But when it comes down to looking at it as, you know, will you be able to see it? At a low re frequency, you can. And as you go up in frequency, it's going to be impossible for you to be able to test.

Is Pulsing Safe for People With Light Sensitivity or Epilepsy?

Mike (06:23)
Okay. What about those, you know, is it safe for people with light sensitivity or even, you know, epilepsy or

Alan (06:30)
This is where I would be cautious because it is important to state this. Whenever you have patients who have epilepsy or migraines, or patients, you know, that at the end of the day sensitive to light itself, or they end up having, you know, nausea or or dizziness or headaches, this is one of those ways that you need to avoid it. Now

Why is that not such a warning for everyone? Because the majority of people can do that. I mean, you step out into the sunlight, you're good. but when it comes to the pulsing itself, we've already seen that even in the pulsing within, you know, watching a movie can provoke these situations. And that's why this information is important for all those who I just mentioned.

Closing Outro

Mike (07:20)
Okay. Yeah, good point. And it's important for anybody considering buying a red light therapy device, be careful of the claims out there for pulsing. As of today, September of two thousand twenty six, there isn't really any definitive studies that show that it has a positive effect on anything. It's more of a theory. So just be careful out there. Am I am I correct with that, Doctor I?

Alan (07:41)
Yeah, there there there's very little, so it's limited. So it's it's not enough for us to be able to suggest in the sense of that's the best way.

Mike (07:51)
Okay. Excellent. So this is a quick episode, but it was jam packed with information and direct questions and answers. Thank you very much, Doctor Eye. If any of you have any questions about red light therapy, go ahead and submit to the Red Light Therapy Podcast. And until next time, Doctor Eye, can we count on you for another episode?

Alan (08:07)
Yeah. See you soon.

Mike (08:08)
Thanks so much.
